Home Insulation Products
There is a large range of insulation products on the market. At Planet Power we have researched and tested many, looking at price, performance, component properties and effectiveness.
After exhaustive research, we have chosen a range of products that we believe represent best environment practice in manufacture and best meet the requirements of our customers.
Higgins Home Insulation
Today more and more Australians are becoming aware of saving energy and energy costs. Up to 45% of heating or cooling is lost without insulation, so Higgins is extremely proud to have developed thermal and acoustic home insulation, which is completely safe, cost-effective and eco-friendly.
The renewable resource of wool is locally sourced in Queensland, which reduces the negative environmental effects of long-haul transportation. In addition, Higgins makes every endeavour in the manufacturing process to reduce output pollution.
No gloves, masks or goggles are required when installing Higgins wool, EarthWool or Polyester insulation. By using only natural products, Higgins has eliminated the harmful effects that some other types of insulation may have on the lungs, eyes and skin.
Being energy-wise today means not only increased comfort, it means protecting the environment by reducing global warming, all the while saving money annually on heating cooling costs.
Higgins insulation is totally safe, a premium insulator, and the perfect solution for the use of natural products. Higgins home insulation has been fully treated to meet the stringent, internationally recognised British Fire Standard. Natural salts and minerals have been added to the wool, effectively making Higgins Wool insulation insect-proof.
Polyester is more cost-effective than wool, providing people of all budgets with an option to consider the benefits of both.
Do It Yourself Home Insulation
Higgins Insulation Batts are safe and easy to install.
Lay the batts between the ceiling joists and ensure there are no gaps between joints. Being safe and soft, Higgins Insulation batts are easily cut with a pair of industrial scissors.
The standard widths of 430mm and 580mm suit 90% of spaces.
Safety goggles, protective clothing and gloves are not normally required; however, “Work safety” practices are best followed.
Note: A 50mm gap (approximately) should be allowed around flue pipes, exhaust fans, recess lights etcetera. Off-cuts may be used to fill small spaces.
Higgins insulation is non-allergenic with no known physical or health hazards. These batts can be handled without any special safety requirements or protective clothing.
Higgins offers natural wool insulation and a totally safe man-made polyester insulation. Both products achieve the same optimum R value, are fully guaranteed, easy to install and completely safe.
Higgins Home Insulation Wool Batts
The advantages that wool has as a versatile textile fibre derive from its complex physical and chemical structure. Wool is composed of more than 20 amino acids, which form long chains (polymers) of protein.
Two different types of cells, the paracortex and the orthocortex, develop into a three-dimensional corkscrew pattern, or helical crimp, of great elasticity. The coiled springs of wool’s molecular chains contribute to the fibre’s resilience.
The outer cuticle and epicotyl layers of fibre give wool its ability to shed water, yet readily admit water vapour. The fibre’s structure is one of great flexibility and adaptability to different environments.
Due to wool’s intricate structure, it has a major advantage over man-made fibres; it breathes and traps air, giving higher thermal and acoustic ratings over other insulators.
Wool can act as a buffer or stabiliser to reduce peak humidity levels and condensation. This has been confirmed in research conducted by the International Wool Secretariat.
Ceiling Batt Applications:
Higgins Wool Ceiling Batts have been designed by Higgins to provide efficient thermal and acoustic insulation to the home owner and to commercial projects including project builders.
The wool batts are supplied in two widths to suit standard domestic constructions:
- 430mm wide to be placed between joists at .450mm centres
- 580mm wide to be placed between joists at .600mm centres
Wall Batt Applications:
Higgins Wool Wall Batts have been manufactured to specific thickness so that correct thermal and acoustic ratings can be achieved without the insulation making contact with the external walls.
Higgins Wool Wall Batts have been designed to reduce exterior noise, heat and cold and to reduce energy costs. Wool wall batts will also reduce the transfer of noise between internal walls. The batts can be stapled or taped into position so that ventilation of the wall cavity is maintained.

Earthwool Batts
Earthwool™ is a new, advanced generation of “super soft” and highly sustainable
insulation. It is thermally efficient and cost-effective in saving energy and providing increased comfort in buildings.
Earthwool™ is non-combustible and also reduces unwanted noise from outside the home and limits sound transmission from room to room.
Made using recycled glass bottles and sand, using Ecose™ technology, Earthwool™ sets a new benchmark for insulation sustainability and ease of handling. It is already ranked in independent sustainability studies as the best performing insulation in terms of low environmental impact – even better than sheep wool, according to the Green Guide for Specification in England. ECOSE® Technology extends the leading position of glass wool and provides Australia with a new choice of highly sustainable insulation.
EarthWool products made using ECOSE® technology benefit from a binder which has no added formaldehyde and is based on renewable bio-based materials instead of the traditional petroleum-based chemicals. This technology has been developed for glass wool and rock mineral wool products, enhancing our environmental credentials, whilst maintain the thermal, acoustic and fire performance and mechanical properties.
It gives a distinctive new look to the EarthWool products – a natural shade of earthy brown, with no added dyes, bleaches or artificial colours. EarthWool is also less dusty and has a much softer and friendlier feel, while maintaining its rigidity and stiffness properties.
The ECOSE® technology binder is up to 70% less energy intensive than the formaldehyde binders used in traditional glass wool insulation. There is no formaldehyde or phenol used in the manufacturing process for EarthWool. It also improves the indoor air quality of buildings where these products are installed, compared to conventional glass wool products.

Polyester Home Insulation Batts
Higgins Polyester insulation is made from polyester, which is comprised of long chains of synthetic carbon polymers. Higgins Polyester Batts are a lightweight, cost-effective insulation material, which is safe and effective to use. Higgins polyester batts are a pure white bonded insulation material that will last a lifetime.
Higgins Insulation has developed polyester batts suitable for the full variation of Australian climatic conditions. This cost-effective insulation can reduce heating and cooling cost by up to 40% annually.
Polyester fibres have a wide variety of end-users in fields such as medicine, food-storage and presentation, apparel and bedding and, of course, the insulation industry. This evidences a high degree of cleanliness, safety and consumer satisfaction.
There is a variety of polyester batts available to suit your individual needs.
- R1.5 – Standard batt designed for insulating walls
- R2.0 90mm Wall batts – Thermal and sound insulation
- R2.5 90mm Wall batts – Premium thermal and sound insulation for walls
- R2.5 Ceiling batts – Ideal for moderate climates
- R3.0 Ceiling Batts – The most popular batt suitable for most regions of Australia
- R3.5 Ceiling batts – Extra performance for harsher climates
- R4.0 Ceiling batts – Ideal for meeting 5-star requirements in more severe climates
The United Nations panel on climate change has identified that buildings represent around 40% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions due to the energy they consume.
Making your home more energy efficient is a key step you can take to reduce this percentage and reduce your own carbon footprint.
