Solar Hot Water Systems (Electric and Gas Boost)

Close Coupled Systems

A close coupled system is where the storage cylinder and the solar collectors are coupled together and the installation is on the roof.
Rinnai Close Coupled Solar systems use a thermo-siphoning principle (i.e. – Hot water rises because it is less dense) to circulate the water through the collectors and then to the storage cylinder without the need for a pump.
Supplementary heating from the electric element or instantaneous gas will bring the water up to temperature if insufficient heat is available from the Sun (such as during cloudy or rainy weather or during winter months.

Features:

  • Low heat loss through greater insulation
  • Supplied standard in Titanium colour
  • Choice of two selective surface collectors

Benefits:

  • Technically very efficient, economical to install and low maintenance
  • No recirculating pumps and pipe runs – reducing heat loss and improving running efficiencies
  • No electricity required to operate pumps to recirculate the water through the panels
  • Space-saving in that it eliminates the need for a storage tank at ground level (ideal for courtyard homes or small blocks)

Split Systems

A split system is where the storage cylinder and the solar collectors are split and installed separately.

A Solar Control Unit ensures the water circulates via a pump between the solar collector and the storage cylinder. This transfers heat from the collectors to the water if enough heat is available from the Sun. The electric element or continuous flow gas booster will bring the water temperature up if necessary.

Features:

  • Rinnai Prestige improved tank insulation levels
  • Streamlined appearance – minimal impact on the aesthetics of your roofline with only the collectors visible
  • Choice of two selective surface collectors

Benefits:

  • Easy installation on roofs
  • Split systems do not require reinforcement of the roof structure as the weight of water storage is at ground level
  • Split system cylinders do not to be installed at the same time
  • Ideal system for construction of new homes and major renovations

Solar Collectors

Excelsior Solar Collectors

  • Highly efficient all-copper collector with a selective surface maximising energy from the Sun
  • Full aluminium fin solar absorber to maximise efficiency
  • 8 riser tubes per panel for effective transfer of solar energy to the water
  • Full aluminium casing for corrosion resistance
  • Equinox Collector has added feature of Frost Protection

Gas Booster

The gas booster is usually installed on a wall near the cylinder and will not activate until the hot water is required.
There may be some periods when the Sun can’t provide for all of your hot water needs (could be rainy weather, or it could be that you have visitors). To cover this situation, the gas booster will come on and bring your water up to temperature.

Regardless of whether you hot water is use in the mornings or evenings, gas boosting is the most efficient, convenient and cost-effective boost option. Gas boosters operate only on demand and have the additional benefit of never running out of hot water.

Hot Water – Evacuated Tube

Solar Lord

PLANET POWER is proud to offer the Solar Lord range of evacuated tube (U-tube and Heat Pipe) hot water systems.

The Solar Lord system is state-of-the-art design from Germany in the tubing and Australian (Sydney University) coating technology for the absorbing surface.

In a Heat Pipe collector, the Sun’s energy that is absorbed by the tubes is the transferred to your water via special pipes located inside each tube. A small amount of non-toxic liquid is located inside each heat pipe, which is turned into gas by the Sun; this gas rises to the tips of the pipes which are inserted into a heat transfer manifold located on your roof. Water is then pumped through this manifold absorbing the heat and storing the heated water in a storage tank located on the ground.

In a U-tube collector, the copper tubing is bent into a U-shape and inlaid into heat transferring fins. The copper tubes and a pair of fins sit inside the evacuated glass tube. When sunlight strikes the collector the solar rays go through the clear glass of the outside tubes and are absorbed by the coating on the outside of the inner tubes. The solar energy is changed into heat energy by the coating surface and heats the inner tube. The fins transfer the heat from the absorbing surface of the inner tube to the copper u-tube. Water flows inside the copper u-tube and is heated and piped to the storage tank.

U-tube collectors maximize solar heat gain and minimise heat loss. It has been tested and proven to be the highest efficiency collector available globally. (Fraunhofer Laboratory, Germany).

The result of this technology is an incredibly efficient system to harness the heat of the sun even in extremely cold areas – a system so efficient that it works even on cloudy or rainy days!

Heating

Do you live in a part of Australia that has really cold winters?

You can change the way those winters impact on your comfort levels by installing hydronic in-floor heating or wall mounted radiant heating panels.

Hydronic heating systems can easily be coupled with solar power (PV) systems to maximise your energy cost savings and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Ask Planet Power to provide an obligation-free quotation for your new Hydronic in-floor or radiant panel heating system and help save the planet.

Pool Pumping

Pool PumpingThe Pentair IntelliFlo system provides the opportunity for a huge reduction in the amount of energy used for pool pumping. The very simple secret is to operate the pump at the lowest flow rate needed to do the job effectively. It takes less energy to move water slowly than it does to move it quickly because there is lower resistance in the filter, accessories and plumbing system. So, even though this pump will work longer, at a lower flow rate this is far more efficient. Reducing pump motor speed by half actually reduces the power needed to 1/8th of what’s consumed at the standard higher speed. That can save thousands of dollars over time – AND THERE IS ALMOST NO PUMP NOISE!

The Pentair IntelliFlo pool pump is also the first to use the vastly more efficient permanent magnet motor technology (used in hybrid cars). The result is dramatically lower electricity cost. Permanent magnet motors produce far less heat and vibration than traditional induction motors. This means not only less stress and wear on the pump components, but on other equipment too. The IntelliFlo motor also has a totally enclosed fan-cooled design that provides exceptional protection from the elements, so you can expect a dramatically longer life for an even greater return on investment.

POWER CONSUMPTION COMPARISON
STANDARD POOL PUMP V PENTAIR INTELLIFLO

Pump Size Power per hr KwH per Day Cost per Day IntelliFlo power per Day Cost per Day
3/4 hp pump 0.55 4.4 $0.97 1.2 $0.26
1 hp pump 0.75 6 $1.32 1.2 $0.26
1.5 hp pump 1.1 8.8 $1.93 1.2 $0.26
2 hp pump 1.5 12 $2.64 1.2 $0.26
3 hp pump 2.2 17.6 $3.87 1.2 $0.26

This chart represents power usage on a standard 50m3 residential swimming pool. The standard pumps listed are running 8 hours per day and using power at the average cost (Qld) of $0.22 per KwH.

The IntelliFlo is running for 12 hours per day and turning the water over 1 time only. Its running costs are based on using 100 watts per hour.

The average pool pump runs 9 hours per day in summer.
